Aljamain Sterling has decided to start the week of his second title defense, by defending something harder, his association with Andrew Tate. The fighter met the controversial influencer while at a party in Dubai and clicked pictures alongside him and his brother Tristan Tate.

As soon as Sterling posted his pictures alongside Tate, captioned, “Top G’s never die! Good chopping it up with you fellas” While some didn’t mind the tweet, a notable minority thought it was tone-deaf of the champion to celebrate someone that’s been ostracized for his highly controversial views on women, least of which was him calling his partners his property.

While taking pictures and celebratory captions were one thing, Sterling then went on to defend his association with Tate for several hours. 12 hours to be exact. Not only Sterling, but even other fighters like Sean O’Malley and welterweight champion Leon Edwards would be spotted alongside the brothers, who seem to be in town to attend UFC 280.

It was in the course of this that Sterling tweeted responding to a fan who proposed that he didn’t agree with Tate due to his view that women wearing nice dresses should hold the responsibility if they were to be sexually assaulted. Seemingly misreading the tweet, Sterling responded with something that would eternally hurt his public image.

Replying to the fan he wrote, “100% correct. Also, said was, with all the mental health issues, and predators out there, why walk home by yourself at odd hours of the night, in sketchy places? That was the responsibility he mentioned for making safe decisions, which makes sense, although doesn’t justify rape”

The problem with this view is that not many victims have a choice, what one may consider a sketchy place may be the only affordable residence for another. What one may consider an odd hour, maybe the only shift for someone else to make a living.

Many victims of sexual assault came out to correct and call out Sterling on the issue as someone with his platform endorsing Tate is a serious matter.

Sterling would rigorously defend his stance and leave up the tweet on his profile. Ultimately, Sterling decided to log off Twitter, saying, “[Twitter] can be oddly fun but this stuff gets annoying when ppl twist your 200 characters and write a novel on you.”

Do you think Sterling was trying to defend sexual assault or was it simply a case of a badly phrased thought? Let us know!
