Yanez and Sterling are occasional training partners for each other. So Yanez was absolutely all smiles when Sterling finally avenged his disqualification win with a more legitimate win over rival and former champion Petr Yan in the rematch at UFC 273 back in early April of 2022. The first fight back in March 2021 ended being a disqualification win for Sterling after Yan ended the fight with an illegal knee strike to the grounded opponent. Sterling defeated Yan in the rematch via split decision. Who is likely to face next, is still not clear yet.

“Going back to social media, everybody talks all that sh*t , but man, like just to see the amount of hate the guy had got, like dude, like people were calling him clown, people were being super super racist man. I was tagged in one of his posts, he tagged me… just looking through the comments… people were getting super racist. So like to see him come out on top just with all the adversity, all the people calling him [out]… it was really really disturbing…” said Yanez who was in awe of how Sterling was able to pull of the victory despite all this amount of negativity.
