UFC 297 marked the promotion’s first event in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in more than five years. But the return was sour as Canadian fighters went 2-7 (0-7 males) on the night. This included Canadian prospect Mike Mallott who lost out big in an upset to Neil Magny. He incurred the loss in way of a TKO in the last round. Mallot is a Contender Series alumni, with a perfect 3-0 pro-MMA stat on his transition to the promotion. The rising prospect has had all stoppage wins in those outings.

But ‘The Haitian Sensation‘ wasn’t one to back down. He later prompted that UFC wanted Mike Malott to win, and the script was evidence of that. Hence, he gave it his all. Mallot though took to social media to formally issue a statement following the crushing last-minute UFC 297 loss. Here’s what he said –

Hey guys, I’m all right — I tried my best, I’m really sorry, I hope ... I’m going to make you guys proud. I’m a little disappointed, but.... I felt really good this camp, no excuses man, I felt really good. I felt good in the fight. I just wasn’t good enough tonight, so. I’m gonna have to make some improvements but I’m so, so touched by all the support I’ve gotten by all the fans. It really means a lot to me...

A career-defining victory was just 15 seconds away for the Canadian. Instead, he couldn’t get off the canvas for minutes afterward. His corner had to carry him out of the cage, still dazed. Malott took to unpack how things had gone via social media. A prime reaction read – “He’s almost on the verge of tears, Ya’ll Canadians need to go easy on him.#UFC 297“.

But the fight bubble hasn’t taken too kindly to it. A multitude of them have gibed the fighter sternly on his losing affair. More than Magny’s shocking win despite the promotion rooting for the undefeated Canadian to win big at home turf, it’s his hazing that has gone prominently viral.

After controlling the entire fight, Canada’s Mike Malott lost big to Neil Magny at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. The stoppage came at 4:45 of Round 3, with Malott looking exhausted and defenseless as Magny rained down punishment. So much so that Malott (10-2-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) was frozen in a trance after the swarm of ground-and-pounds.

The disappointed fighter released a statement on his loss through IG reels, in which he apologized to his fans back home. He even nudged on having to make some improvements and come back stronger. Here’s how the MMA community reacted to the matter –

Canadian male fighters all lost on the night’s event. Malott had finished his first three UFC opponents and earned two Performance of the Night bonuses before being stopped by Magny.

Many fans subsequently sneered at Mallot for having ‘lost any bit of aura’ with this skid. While a handful of fans supported the emotional purport of the message, most others have harshly hazed the fighter, in prime Canadian fashion too.

In the suit of legendary Georges St-Pierre knocking down Matt Serra, prompting his rise from rising prospect to full-blown contender, there might be hopes for Mallot yet. Candian combatants, famed for their brazen and rough demeanor do characteristically bounce back big after such skids.

Only time will tell if that’s the case for Mallot as well.
