After losing the UFC light heavyweight championship, Jan Blachowicz won his first bout.

On Saturday in Las Vegas, the former champion defeated Aleksandar Rakic by TKO in the third round of the UFC Fight Night main event.

It was a dismal conclusion to a two-round intense competition. Rakic’s knee appeared to give out as he stepped backwards after a leg strike from Blachowicz. After Rakic slumped to the canvas in pain, referee Mark Smith stopped the fight.

Rakic sliced Jan’s left eyelid and drew the first blood. On the inside, Blachowicz delivered some strong punches, but the opening act was a close call. Rakic dominated the second round with a huge takedown that he maintained until the final bell. In the third frame, Rakic’s leg crumbled under his own weight, prompting him to take a step back. After Rakic slumped and began gripping his knee in pain, the referee intervened and stopped the fight. Although it’s unlikely that Jan meant to win this manner, prizefighting is a sport where the prior winner may be given another chance.

Soon after, Rakic issued a statement in which he confessed that the same injury occurred three weeks prior at training camp.

He also shared his opinions on the fight, saying that he thought he won the first two rounds and was planning on tearing Blachowicz apart in the third before the injury.

He stated, “A great battle took place in the octagon tonight but unfortunately it ended not the way Jan and I or the fans wanted. The same damn injury from 3 weeks ago in camp showed up again tonight. I felt I won both rounds, round one being close but round two was just mine then I opened up really good even in the third before my knee buckled…

Knowing the fact that my cardio was off the chart I  would start to picking him apart from third round on but it is what it is. Congratulations to Jan and I wish him the best. I will take care of this injury and come back like you never seen me before. This is an unfinished fight between Jan and I and I really hope [the UFC] gives me a REMATCH.

Blachowicz wins the fight and hopes to reclaim the title he lost to Glover Teixeira in October

With Teixeira already requesting a rematch, Blachowicz gladly accepted, and will now cheer for the Brazilian to win his own fight against Jiri Prochazka in the UFC 275 main event in June.
