Madison Square Garden is often called the Mecca of sports arenas. Greats like Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan have delivered otherworldly performances at the iconic venue. Incidentally, New York was relatively late to accept the legitimacy of MMA. However, when the venue was open for UFC events, the promotion set up a monumental clash of Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez. Alex Pereira will be headlining the upcoming PPV at Madison Square Garden.
Interestingly, nobody has headlined a UFC event at MSG more than once and Alex Pereira will become the first to do so when he fights Jiri Prochazka at the UFC 295. Since the McGregor vs Alvarez bout, the UFC has held events annually at the MSG. The Covid related lockdown resulted in a no-show in 2020. Moreover, Adesanya is undefeated at MSG, he has as of now fought once each in MMA and Kickboxing at MSG.
All the UFC PPVs in MSG beginning from UFC 205: McGregor vs Alvarez were monumental clashes. The latest event was also headlined by Alex Pereira as he delivered a come-from-behind victory at UFC 281 to become the UFC middleweight champion. Moreover, Daniel Cormier and Georges St. Pierre became double champions at UFC 230 and UFC 217 respectively at the MSG.
MSG also witnessed the first BMF title clash between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal and also the Kamaru Usman vs Colby Covington rematch. At UFC 295, Pereira would be looking to make it 4-0 at MSG in his combat sports career. His opponent, Jiri Prochazka is no slouch even though Pereira is a small favorite for the fight.
Alex Pereira, in his MSG debut, headlined Glory 55 against Yousri Belgaroui
UFC 295 will be Alex Pereira’s third fight in the iconic MSG. His fist fight in the MSG for UFC was UFC 281 against Israel Adesanya. Moreover, his first fight at MSG was for Glory Kickboxing. It was against Yousri Belgaroui in his third defense of the Glory Kickboxing middleweight title.
However, he did not compete at the Madison Square Garden Arena. He competed at the Hulu Theater which is located beneath the Madison Square Garden arena. Nevertheless, he would go on to win the bout via first-round KO. Surprisingly, it was his right hook that knocked his opponent as opposed to his powerful left hook.
The fight was a rematch of Glory 49: Rotterdam which was headlined by Rico Verhoeven and Jamel Ben Saddik. At Glory 49, Pereira had his bout ended in the third round by the doctor after Belgaroui suffered critical damage. Interestingly, Pereira was at the UFC Apex to support his opponent in his Dana White Contender Series bout. Unfortunately, he lost the fight via decision.
