Alexander Volkanovski was injured during the title bout last Saturday. The UFC featherweight champion confirmed on social media that he will have surgery to fix a fractured thumb sustained during his trilogy bout against opponent Max Holloway at UFC 276.

In Volkanovski’s tweets, he says, “Broke my thumb in the second round, but that don’t stop us! Having surgery today and will be out for 12 weeks. Looking forward to getting back out there, thanks to everyone for the support.”

Alexander said that he broke his thumb during the fight’s second round. According to him, his healing will take him out of commission for at least 12 weeks, which means he won’t be able to return until the end of the year.

Volkanovski is currently on a 22-fight winning streak, with victories in four consecutive title defence. He continued to dominate throughout the bout, winning the unanimous decision 50-45 on all three judges’ scorecards. He is also the fourth fighter in UFC history to win his first 12 fights, joining legends such as Anderson Silva, Kamaru Usman, and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“The Great” believes he has earned the right to call his own shots and demanded it during the UFC 276 post-fight press conference, and he wants to defend his title in his home country of Australia.

Volkanovski says, “I’m sick of getting booed, man. I’m a nice f***ing guy and I’m getting booed every time I fight in other people’s countries. Everyone’s getting nice home crowd advantages when I’m the champion. This trilogy, I didn’t get to fight on my home turf at all. It was neutral ground and two on his turf. Let me f***ing defend my belt back home, and we’re making it happen.”
