Alexander Volkanovski has a clear favorite in one of the featured bouts at UFC 280 between Sean O’Malley and Petr Yan. That favorite is his TMT training partner, No Mercy, Petr Yan.

Yan will be looking to go 3-0 in the desert as he returns to Abu Dhabi, a place where he has won two titles, one against Aldo and the other an interim belt against Cory Sandhagen. Looking to bounce back from his previous setback against Aljamain Sterling, Yan will face off against #11 ranked bantamweight, O’Malley.

Describing it as a “very interesting fight” Volk expressed his enthusiasm to witness how the well-rounded experience of Yan would fare against the flashiness and youth of O’Malley. “Petr Yan’s my guy, I like both guys, I haven’t got nothing against the both of them, I actually quite like both of these fighters, but Yan is one of my boys, I’ve trained with him at Tiger Muay Thai”, said Volk as he praised his training partner.

However, Volk did acknowledge that the fact that it was a three-round fight will certainly spice up the contest. “That is the factor that makes it closer in my books, obviously O’Malley is an underdog and he should be, ” said Volk about the nature of the 15-minute fight.

“We all know that Yan likes to get that knowledge, likes to break people down early and sort of get some reads, and then go. He’s very durable, he’s tough, and he’s very good, I really don’t think he even needs to feel out fighters, that’s how good Yan is, but he does like to feel them out, I think it’d be a bad idea to do that against O’Malley, “ said Volkanovski as he highlighted O’Malley ability to fight well off the backfoot, carrying KO power as a counter puncher.

Volkanovski then expressed his wish to see his partner come out aggressive from the start, saying, “He’s a very durable fighter, he’s very defensively sound, he doesn’t make many mistakes anyway so I feel like he can really let his hands go and really capitalize on opportunities straight away. “
