Ali Abdelaziz reacts to Leon Edwards rumors of stepping away from title shot

Leon Edwards is known to be unlucky in the welterweight division. But it is highly unlikely that a title shot slips away from his hands this time around. However, a moment of shock came about when a rumor went around suggesting the British fighter had decided to step away from the title fight.

If there is anyone in this world that knows who Kamaru Usman is going to fight, it is Dominance MMA manager, Ali Abdelaziz. Recently things got interesting and fiery on the internet as MMA analyst Chael Sonnen spoke on the rumor about Leon Edwards stepping down from his title fight to give way to Irish superstar Conor McGregor. “Rocky” was quick to dismiss the rumor and confirm that he is next in line.

Usman’s manager Ali Abdelaziz found it hilarious that the rumor of such was spread. Ali gave the word of confidence to Edwards as he wrote, “We see soon champ” on Twitter replying to Leon’s tweet.

The rumor suggested that Edwards had already been paid his “Show” and “Win” money to pave way for Conor to take on the welterweight champion on his return in a super fight. The Irish superstar has said that he would want to take on The Nigerian Nightmare in an attempt to become the first triple division champion in UFC.

Leon Edwards is undoubtedly one of the most talented fighters in the welterweight division. He has the second-longest winning streak in the division only second to the champion Kamaru Usman himself. The last time Edwards lost was to Usman in the year 2015 and since then the British fighter has not faced defeat in the octagon.

For someone who has been unbeatable for so long, you would only imagine he would have fought for the title already. But the fighter has been very unlucky in terms of sealing a fight to guarantee a title shot. First, Leon was paired against former champion Tyron Woodley in 2020 at UFC Fight Night 171 but the fight fell off. Then Edwards was paired with welterweight prospect Khamzat Chimaev but COVID 19 ended up canceling that fight twice.

Edwards also faced Belal Muhammad on short notice but the fight ended as a ‘No Contest’ when Edwards accidentally eye poked Belal in the first round. Edwards then took the risk of fighting superstar Nate Diaz at UFC 263 instead of waiting for the title shot and won the fight via unanimous decision and was dominant in all the rounds except the final seconds when Diaz managed to stun him. Till today, most fans remember the Diaz vs Edwards fight for how it ended rather than Edwards’ dominant display.
