In UFC 292, Aljamain Sterling was on the verge of defending his title for the fourth time. However, Sean O’Malley did not let that happen. He knocked Sterling out in the second round. Ever since then, Sterling has been celebrating his three-fight title run with his team and loved ones.
Before his fight with O’Malley, Sterling had announced that he might move up to featherweight too. After his recent posts, viewers find it hard to believe he was 135lbs just five days ago. Sterling was seen partying a lot, and as a result, he has gained about 40 pounds now.
Through a vlog post on his YouTube channel, Sterling has showcased his activities these last five days. Ever since his loss, he has been spending his massive fight purse. Sterling did not have the same physique when he faced Sean O’Malley. Visibly looking big, many are speculating that he will now have to make a move to the featherweight division. Currently walking at 175 lbs, Sterling is about two divisions above his normal weight.
Just like O’Malley, Sterling is a physically big fighter in the bantamweight division. This factor has always made it difficult for fighters to make the weight cut. Going up a division is the next option for Sterling. The decision comes with the challenge of facing Alexander Volkanovski.
After his loss to O’Malley, the Funkmaster was doubtful about facing Volkanovski. Other than Aljamain Sterling, Suga Sean has a lot of other fighters lined up for a title shot. Sterling has stated that he will only be stepping into the octagon in 2024. Whether it will be to regain his lost title or make a featherweight debut is not yet confirmed.
The Funkmaster Aljamain Sterling for the featherweight
Prior to his loss to Sean O’Malley, Aljamain Sterling was quite confident about moving up to featherweight division. He wanted to face the feared champion Alexander Volkanovski. Sterling’s loss to O’Malley may have halted his aim. After getting caught with a knockout counter shot, many fear what would have happened if he faced Volkanovski.
There are still a lot of doubts regarding his next move. If he does wish to stay at bantamweight, there is a long line of potential fighters trying for the title too. O’Malley personally has not mentioned a rematch with Sterling but wants to run it back with Marlon Vera. Sterling may be pushed into a featherweight fight after all.
After his title loss, Sterling has been relaxing and has gained close to 40 extra pounds. The fighter also gave some insights into his future. Sterling feels like he only has a few more top-level fights to perform in. No matter what, he surely has been a true champion, and a move up in the weight could help him shine again.
