“He really doesn’t deserve it”- Aljamain Sterling marks Petr Yan as unworthy of a trilogy match against him
Aljamain Sterling- Petr Yan
Petr Yan faced his arch-nemesis, Aljamain Sterling at the co-main event of UFC 273 for the undisputed bantamweight title. He lost his belt to Sterling after hitting him with an illegal knee back at UFC 259. He was unhappy with the way things turned out, and he waited for 13 months to get his hands on the champ.
Sterling was coming off from career-changing neck surgery, and he was out of action for over 9 months. Yan, on the other hand, fought Cory Sandhagen for the interim bantamweight title, and he looked better than ever. The fight started and Sterling took a more measured approach, he took his time to feel out his opponent, and he executed a perfect game plan to get the split decision win.
Many weren’t satisfied with the decision, and Dana White too thought the judges made a huge mistake by giving Sterling the edge. The champ, on the other hand, isn’t concerned about these comments, and he is enjoying his time after the biggest fight of his career.
“I wasn’t even really thinking about it”– Aljamain Sterling reflects on calling out TJ Dillashaw after UFC 273
Yan demanded an immediate rematch, but Sterling called out TJ Dillashaw after the fight, he talked about his next title defense on The MMA Hour, and he said, “When I thought about it afterward, I was like, he really doesn’t deserve it. He really didn’t earn it. Maybe it’s just because I heard the narrative so much, that he was gonna be getting the winner of myself and Yan when we were supposed to fight in Abu Dhabi. So maybe I just got wrapped up in that.”
“Honestly, if I think there’s anyone more deserving, it would probably be Aldo after beating Font, if we’re doing the merit system. That would be the most rational in terms of merit, like what have you done for me lately. Even Cruz, these guys all got big names. TJ, I don’t know how he got in the mix, but somehow I just felt like he was the next guy, so I just threw it out there. I wasn’t even really thinking about it, to be honest,” he concluded.
