“She lost her last fight” Amanda Nunes furious over Valentina Shevchenko’s allegations of copying her style at UFC 277
Both Shevchenko and Nunes have proven to be levels above their competition time and again, prompting them to complete their trilogy fight
Amanda Nunes proved today that she is arguably the better fighter between her and Julianna Pena. Now the only person standing between her and an undisputed GOAT title is Valentina Shevchenko. Though the two have fought twice in the past, with Nunes coming out victorious both times, they were both close fights with a legitimate argument for the second to be in Valentina’s favor.
At UFC 277, Nunes got to exact her revenge against Pena, who had previously defeated her at UFC 269, her first loss in 8 years and taking away Nunes’ status as double champ. In Dallas, from the opening round, Nunes looked like a woman on a mission, scoring a record 3 three knockdowns in a single round as she cruised her way to a dominant victory over a bloodied and beaten Pena
After Amanda’s performance at 277, Shevchenko would congratulate both women however she would accuse Nunes of copying her stand-up style in order to secure the victory. While obvious similarities existed, it would be unfair to Amanda to make this assessment as she was very capable of mixing up her offense with takedowns and trips.
Amanda Nunes feels she’s the better champion among her and Valentina Shevchenko
After her most recent loss, Nunes was quickly dismissed as the undisputed GOAT in the women’s division, with Shevchenko taking her place with her string of 7 title defenses. However, she herself would have her bumps in the road as she struggled for five rounds against Taila Santos, edging out a decision victory. This was a fact not lost on Amanda.
At the post-fight press conference, in the line of questioning Amanda about her next fight possibly being a trilogy against Shevchenko, she was made aware of Shevchenko’s accusations of mimicking her style. Letting out a loud chuckle, Nunes replied, “That’s funny,” as she composed herself she continued, “She has to put out something like that to stand out, cause right now, as a champion, Valentina is in a difficult position”
“She lost her last fight, you know, I really think that if Taila hadn’t received that headbutt, the fight would’ve been very different,” said Nunes as she revealed that she felt the inadvertent foul is what led to the champion gaining the edge in the latter rounds of the fight. Nunes was positive about a possible rematch with Shevchenko on her return to action.
A second rematch with Pena has been ruled out by most, considering the absolute display of dominance by Amanda in the rematch. Morever this was Pena’s first title defense meaning she has to beat at least one contender before she stakes her claim to the title. Who do you feel would be the ideal opponent for Nunes going ahead?
