In 2021, at UFC 269, the combat sports world witnessed one of the biggest upsets of the sport as Julianna Pena dethroned the GWOAT Amanda Nunes to become the bantamweight champion of UFC. Leading up to the fight, Julianna was a huge underdog and Amanda was guaranteed to walk through Pena in her title defense. However, Julianna’s self-belief and willpower helped her achieve the impossible.

Amanda still is a champion of the women’s featherweight division in UFC but that weight class has barely any contenders. Losing the bantamweight belt was a huge deal to the entire world but Dana White doubts if it was to Nunes.

Amanda has been at the top of the game for her entire life and leading up to her fight against Julianna, Amanda has lost only once in her UFC career. Dana believes Amanda’s personal life may have affected Nunes’ drive to give her all in the octagon.

Nunes reacted to Dana’s comment, and she accepted the fact that she became way too comfortable in her life, and that reflected upon her performance at UFC 269. Nunes parted ways with her long-time gym ATT after this, and now she is training from her home. She is dialed in for her preparations, and she is confident that she’s going to win the belt back.

Nunes talked to MMA Fighting before this fight, and she reflected upon her journey to become the best female fighter in the world, she recalled how her life changed when she moved to the US, and how it would’ve been different had she stayed in Brazil.

She said, “When the opportunity came and doors opened for me, I went in, and thank God I became who I am. Maybe (Brazilians) like more those who stay in Brazil, I don’t know. Maybe they don’t like me, really, what can I do?”

“If you ask a lot of people if they want to leave Brazil, there’s a lot of people that want it. Each person has their own opinion about staying in Brazil or here. Nobody is less Brazilian or anything like that. I love the country I was born in, but everybody seeks what’s best for them, where they will have the best opportunities and get well-paid,” Nunes concluded.
