“Surprised that it took him this long”- Anthony Pettis comments on Charles Oliveira becoming the undisputed UFC champ

Charles Oliveira makes his title defense against Dustin Poirier at UFC 269

UFC Lightweight champion Charles Oliveira has silenced many doubters on his way to becoming the world champion. Oliveira has come out a long way of wins and losses to initiate a 10-fight winning streak in the latest phase of his career and win a world championship as well, only to defend it against what many had thought was the best lightweight in the division back at UFC 269 in December 2021.

Oliveira went on to shock the world when he finished former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier via submission in the third round, the same way that former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Poirier.

Now, Oliveira is looking for a second title defense against another former interim champion in Justin Gaethje. A win over Gaethje as well might put Oliveira amongst the discussions of the greatest lightweights of all time. Gaethje earned his shot by going on an absolute war against Michael Chandler.

He is more focused than ever, and he is looking to make the most out of his second title shot. Gaethje knows Oliveira is better than him on the ground, and that’s why he is working on his stand-up skills, and he wants to stop him in his tracks before the fight hits the ground.

Oliveira is a dominant champ, but he still doesn’t get the respect he deserves, his former opponent Anthony Pettis talked about him in his recent interview, and he had something interesting to say about ‘Do Bronx.”

“I was surprised that it took him this long [to become champion], man. Because when I fought him I was like, ‘Yo, this…’ — at ‘45, he was a little fragile, I was, too. But, seeing him come into his own and use his full skills, his overall striking and jiu-jitsu, he’s well rounded, man. His jiu-jitsu nullifies the wrestling because he’s very dangerous and then his striking is good.” (H/T MMAMania.com)

“When I fought him, I was surprised by how technical his kickboxing was so yeah, big ups to him, too,” he continued. “I’m not a hater, bro. I love the fact that he’s where he’s at. I follow him on Instagram, I see what he’s doin,’ I experienced that so I wish everybody could experience that part of that life.” (H/T MMAMania.com)
