“His speed and athleticism matches Alex,” Anthony Smith suggests the next challenge for Alexander Volkanovski after UFC 276 win
Anthony Smith- Alexander Volkanovski
If Alexander Volkanovski thinks he has left the featherweight division cleaned, Anthony Smith has one solid name to suggest as the challenger at 145 lbs. Volkanovski, the current UFC featherweight champion, last fought and dominated preceding champion Max Holloway in a trilogy for the ages at the co-main event of UFC 276. Volkanovski is currently the #2 ranked pound for pound fighter on UFC rankings. Volkanovski has defended his title a record of 4 times so far.
Volkanovski is now planning to move up to 155 lbs and challenge for the lightweight title, which is most probably be going against Charles Oliveira, who has only lost his belt currently due to missing weight by merely 0.5 lbs in his last fight. In his resume, Volkanovski is 24-1 with a 22-fight winning streak and wins over the likes of Holloway (thrice), Brian Ortega, Chad Mendes, Jose Aldo, Chan Sung Jung, and many more. Volkanovski trains under Free Style MMA from Australia and City Kickboxing from New Zealand.
Anthony Smith believes the excitement of Emmett vs Volkanovski lies in just the physicality itself
In a podcast co-hosted alongside UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping, UFC Light-heavyweight Anthony Smith talks about what is next for “The Great” Volkanovski who’s in the prime of his career and currently one of the best fighter in the world with supporting debates of being the greatest featherweight of all times as well. Smith didn’t take much time to speak out the opponent he thinks that Volkanovski should fight next.
“I’d like to see Volkanovski versus Josh Emmett, I really do” says Smith. “Physically, the way those guys matchup… the styles.. Josh’s speed and athleticism matches Volkanovski. I think he can match his speed closer than anybody else can. He moves really well, he’s got really good wrestling. I think just [based on] the physicality alone like that is a fantastic match up,” concluded Smith.
Emmett, 37, is on a 5-fight winning streak with his last win being the biggest one when he edged Calvin Kattar via split decision. Emmett, a product of Team Alpha Male of California, has more notable wins in his resume such as Michael Johnson, Ricardo Lamas, Dan Ige, Shane Burgos and many more. Emmett has also expressed his interest to fight nothing else but for the title next. Other than that, who else do you think deserves a title shot at featherweight?
