“These aren’t show ponies”- Ariel Helwani lobbies for guaranteed pay checks for UFC fighter after Calvin Kattar’s performance against Josh Emmett
Josh Emmett beats Calvin Kattar
UFC in Austin, Texas, hosted the card of Calvin Kattar vs Josh Emmett, they were pampered by a record-tying night of eight knockouts. Then, over the course of five rounds, Kattar and Emmett engaged in a violent, tactical war that culminated with Emmett winning a split decision. Which was extremely controversial in the MMA Community.
Both of them started with a lot of feints as if they were just trying to figure each other by establishing the distance out before going all out. Emmett produced huge combinations to reduce the gap, Kattar used his characteristic jab to maintain the distance. Kattar’s long, straight punches were pitted against Emmett’s powerful and looping power shots in this encounter. It was evident from the start of the fight that the fighter who could lead the forward engagement would be the one conducting the most effective job.
“They deserve a say”- Ariel Helwani takes a stand for fighter pay post the controversial loss for Calvin Kattar
Post the fight, Kattar believes he handed out more damage round each round in a five-round back-and-forth battle, and that this should have been enough to earn him the win on the scoreboards. He stated, “I didn’t care, sometimes we give a s*** if it’s unanimous or a split. I thought I did enough to win the fight. Josh is a class act, a tough kid. Congrats to him and his team. Seeing this, Ariel’s altruistic side came to life, he felt he needs to comment on the situation.
He tweeted out the following, “a guy like Calvin Kattar, who was 1/2 of an amazing fight, fought his heart out & arguably won, leaves w/ half his paycheck because 2 guys didn’t think he won 3 rounds. So wack. Guaranteed money is long overdue. Esp for the top guys.”
Ariel is plausibly making a viable point. He further stated, “Imagine thinking Calvin doesn’t deserve what was earmarked for him. Especially with that gate tonight. Cmon. These aren’t show ponies.”
