UFC middleweight Gregory Rodrigues is known for his ‘Fight of the Night’ with Chidi Njokuani. He returns this weekend at UFC Vegas 86. He will fight Brad Tavares on the main card of UFC Vegas 86. Ahead of the bout, Rodrigues answered questions on media day. As such, a reporter jokingly asked whether he would change his name to ‘Robo Obama.’ The question arose due to the fighter’s striking resemblance to former US President Barack Obama.
In response, Gregory Rodriguez chuckled at the question and disclosed even his wife said the same. As such, he said his wife urged him to accept it. So, he agreed with her and acknowledged his resemblance to Barack Obama. Here is what he said:
Even my wife, 'you look like Obama man. You need to accept that.' I said, Okay, lets go.Gregory Rodrigues (via UFC Vegas 85 Media day)
Earlier, Gregory Rodrigues was asked the same question before his fight with Chidi Njokuani in 2022. Then, he declined he had any resemblance to Barack Obama and rejected the name ‘Robo Obama.’ Later, he posted a comparison picture of himself and Obama on his Instagram and asked the fans about his similarity to Obama. Now, he seemed to have changed his mind and accepted the fans’ opinion. But he wasn’t ready to change his fight name.
Gregory Rodrigues bounced back spectacularly from a loss in his previous fight. He finished Denis Tiuliulin in the very first round in August 2023. As such, he would look to put up a winning streak with a win this weekend against Brad Tavares. Rodrigues has knockout power and that could become a weapon against Tavares. Likewise, this is the case for Tavares too as he won his latest fight after losing his last one.
Throwback to the first time Gregory Rodrigues addressed his resemblance to Barack Obama
Over the years, many fans have stated Gregory Rodrigues resembled former US President Barack Obama. As such, these comparisons went over the board when a reporter questioned him ahead of his fight with Chidi Njokuani in 2022. The reporter suggested he change his nickname from ‘Robocop’ to ‘Robo Obama.’
Gregory Rodrigues laughed at the question and replied amusingly. However, he took a little offense in comparing him to the 62-year-old Barack Obama. As such, he reiterated he was just 30 years old and looked handsome. Here is what he said:
Come on bro, I will jump on you here right now. (Laughs) Man, Obama is old. Obama is a nice president, but I'm handsome guys, come on. Why you guys call me Obama man, He's an old dude. Come on guys, I'm young. I'm in my 30's and dudes saying I'm looking like I'm in my 50s.Gregory Rodrigues (via UFC Vegas 60 media day)
After years, Gregory Rodrigues finally agreed with the fans and accepted he looked like Brack Obama. The former US President is a popular figure in pop culture. Hence, fans could easily mistake Rodrigues with the former President. Currently, he has a UFC record of 5-2, with his latest victory coming off a quick knockout. Now, he will face Brad Tavares in a middleweight clash in UFC Vegas 86.
