Dana White has declared Colby Covington will be fighting for the welterweight title next. Dana White and the UFC have been pretty adamant and justified Covington’s title shot on many occasions. However, many welterweight fighters do not see through the same eye as Dana White. Belal Muhammad is still trying to see the reasoning behind the matchmaking and thinks that Covington is not a PPV star.
Colby Covington surprised everyone when he appeared as the backup fighter for Usman vs Edwards 3 at UFC 286. Leon Edwards won the fight via split decision and successfully managed to defend his title for the first time. Immediately after the fight, Dana White announced that Colby Covington would be fighting for the welterweight title next. However, several welterweight fighters were disappointed by White’s decision. Covington had been inactive for nearly a year while other competitors rose through the ranks and defeated opponents. Many others believed Covington was unworthy of the opportunity.
Belal Muhammad, who has already fought Edwards, thinks that Colby Covington is not that big of a PPV star to deserve the opportunity. ” I think it’s just that Colby — don’t know — maybe Dana White has a love for him or the UFC sees something in him. I don’t think he’s a superstar. The PPVs he’s sold is because of Masvidal or Kamaru Usman. I don’t think it has anything to do with him,” expressed Belal Muhammad.
Belal is on an eight-fight winning streak, including a no-contest against champion Leon Edwards. Despite the fact that even Edwards believes Covington does not deserve the championship opportunity, he will have to defend his title against “Chaos” very soon. Meanwhile, Gilbert Burns has challenged Belal Muhammad to a fight at UFC 288, but no new information about a potential bout has been released.
UFC 288 may potentially witness a match between Gilbert Burns and Belal Muhammad

After his win over Jorge Masvidal, welterweight fighter Gilbert Burns is hungry for more. With many fights being rescheduled or replaced for UFC 288 fans were not happy with how the event was turning out to be. Gilbert Burns saw the opportunity and called out Belal Muhammad for a fight. Durihno’s last win over Jorge Masvidal ensured that he was next in line for a title shot, but Burns wanted to stay active until that opportunity came knocking on his door.
Back in January, Gilbert Burns tweeted that he was ready to fight anybody in the division. Shortly after that, Belal Muhammad also tweeted the same thing. While Belal did not fight anybody, Burns went on to defeat Masvidal. However, recently Burns brought up Belal’s tweet and called him out for UFC 288. With the event nearing, Belal stated on Twitter that he wouldn’t be able to make the weight and asked for a catchweight bout. This sparked a Twitter feud between the two.
Burns, since then, has called Dustin Poirier for the fight as well. While there is no confirmation on his next fight, Burns was heavily praised by UFC President Dana White for wanting more fights.
