Belal Muhammad is primed to make a statement in the UFC’s welterweight division, fuelled by desire and a feeling of unfinished business. After his previous fight against Leon Edwards ended in a no-contest due to an inadvertent eye poke, Muhammad feels the proposed rematch will allow him to demonstrate his progression as a fighter.

Muhammad showed confidence in his improvement since the original bout with Edwards in a recent interview with MMA Fighting.  He emphasized how subsequent fights against top-tier opponents had developed his talents. Belal Muhammad claims to have improved in all parts of his game, from wrestling with Demian Maia to striking exchanges with Vicente Luque and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. This is what he had to say:

I think I’m the most dominant welterweight in the division and I think that once I get my shot the UFC, Dana White, all of them are going to know that they had the most dominant welterweight to ever do it standing underneath them this whole time and they’re going to realize ‘yo, we’ve got to start pushing this guy, this guy’s a monster, he’s a beast.

After UFC 296, Belal Muhammad slams the performances of Leon Edwards and Colby Covington

Belal Muhammad did not mince words after UFC 296 ended. He criticized both Leon Edwards and Colby Covington’s performances. The highly anticipated welterweight title fight was a letdown. This made Muhammad unhappy with both the champion and the presumed No. 1 contender.

In an interview on the UFC 296 post-fight program, Muhammad expressed his disappointment with the bout. He called it a “joke to the division.” He targeted Colby Covington in particular, who had had failed to live up to the pre-fight hype. Muhammad believes Covington did not deserve the championship opportunity and did not follow through on his words throughout the fight.

Muhammad chastised Leon Edwards for not overpowering Covington more convincingly despite winning by unanimous decision. He claimed that Edwards should have capitalized on Covington’s flaws and delivered a more remarkable performance.
