“No. 1 contender fight”- Belal Muhammad reveals who he’d like to fight next
Belal Muhammad
UFC Welterweight Belal Muhammad could not be in any better position than right now in his career. Breaking into the top 5, Muhammad has been on an absolute best in fighting with his last two wins being the most significant ones of his career. In December, Muhammad fought former 2-time UFC title challenger Stephen Thompson whom he outwrestled throughout the fight to win a unanimous decision. Recently, he avenged his knockout loss to Vicente Luque in a rematch that showed a lot about Muhammad’s striking as well.
Muhammad is now eyeing to get closer to the title shot and for that, he has to pick those fights with opponents who are ahead of him in rankings. The reigning defending welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, is most likely to fight #2 ranked welterweight Leon Edwards. The #1 ranked welterweight, Colby Covington is coming off a win against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272. The #3 and #4 ranked welterweights Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns have just come off fighting each other in a fight of the year contender at UFC 273, the battle of which Chimaev won.
Belal Muhammad thinks him vs Khamza Chimaev is a clear path to a title shot
In an interview with TMZ Sports, Muhammad talks about his feud with Covington, his take on trash-talking in fights and much more. Muhammad then stated who his next opponents should be, according to him.
“I think it’s either him [Colby Covington] or Chimaev,“ says Belal “I think both of those make the most sense… I think Chimaev makes a lot of sense because neither of us fought for the title yet. Neither of us fought Kamaru [Usman, the welterweight champion] yet. We’re the only ones in the top 5 that that [Usman] hasn’t seen. So I think if we do one of those, that will be a number one contender fight and it makes a clear path to see who gets the next shot,” he concluded.
What do you make of Belal Muhammad’s wish to fight either one of Colby Covington or Khamzat Chimaev next? All these 3 fighters are men of excellent wrestling pedigree but while Covington and Muhammad are more like grinders that will outwrestle and wear their opponents out till the last bell of the fight, Chimaev is more of a finisher. While Muhammad versus Covington can be highly competitive, do you think he wins over Chimaev?
