Leon Edwards defeated rival welterweight contender Colby Covington at UFC 296. Thus fuelling Belal Muhammad‘s chances at the gold next. But Edwards, the now 22-3 British striker has been highly dismissive of Muhammad, denying him a title shot. Conversely, Muhammad has retorted back. Speaking at the UFC 296 post-fight presser, “Rocky” wished upon a deserving opponent for the 170lb title shot next. To him, “Remember The Name” does not qualify as much as memorable.
Muhammad had overtly criticized the title contenders before. He grinned through and served as a backup while Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington got his 3rd title shot in the division. Despite Muhammad’s 9-win streak, he has remained on the sidelines. Adding substance to the fire, here’s what “Rocky” recently wrote, taking to X:
Lol Belal calm down son you’re the least intimidating person in the organisation. I already told UFC I don’t mind I’ll fight you next that’s easy work. You just have to figure out why they hate you so much...Leon Edwards on X

Muhammad was critical and fired vigorous insults at UFC 296’s all-out welterweight headliner. Edwards, and even Covington himself had hinted at Muhammad not “being next“. Muhammad had gibed back at this proposition; which correspondingly sprouted more indignation from the reigning 170lber titleholder. Previously in an interview with MMA Fighting, Muhammad had said:
Honestly, that’s what pisses me off the most about him...That’s what’s making me dislike him the most. Not even the fact that we fought, and he’s the one who committed the foul. He’s the one who eye-poked me. I’m the one who took the fight on three weeks’ notice, so he could have a fight...Belal Muhammad to MMA Fighting
Muhammad, at 23-3 has highlight wins over the top 15 divisional peers. Serving as a last-minute backup to the preceding title bout at Las Vegas’s T-Mobile Arena, the 170lber had hoped to curry enough validation for a No. #1 contender spot. But without the reciprocation, the fighter had snapped back at Edwards.
Leon Edwards’ team lobbies for Gilbert Burns over Belal Muhammad, post-UFC 296
Recently, starring in UFC 296’s headlining main event, Leon “Rocky” Edwards provided a unanimous decision skid to Colby Covington. The latter thus now has accumulated 3 title skids; the others being at UFC 245 and UFC 268. Both of those were to the 20-4 Freestyle Nigerian standout and former P4P king Kamaru Usman. This pip on “Chaos” and the division as a whole has infuriated Belal Muhammad. Moreover, he has voiced grave concerns over not having a title shot against Edwards yet again.

But the thread of indignity to “Remember the name” does not stop there – since once again his name was not recalled as a top contender. Check out what Edwards’ cornerman and coach Dave Lovell recently said to MMA Hour’s Ariel Helwani.
Muhammad had provided Gilbert Burns with a lopsided unanimous decision slight at UFC 288. Additionally, he had also poked the fighter’s claim of injury in light of loss. Now, however, Edwards and his corner are preferring Burns as a more potent option than Muhammad, thus adding to the latter’s woes.
