“Want to fight after Leon got belt,” Ben Askren viciously SHUTS DOWN Jorge Masvidal’s attempt to get title shot against Edwards
Jorge Masvidal- Ben Askren- Leon Edwards
Even though his brutal loss to Jorge Masvidal marked the end of his hype inside the UFC, Ben Askren has never shut his criticism down about the UFC megastar. Askren is a former Bellator MMA and former ONE Championship welterweight champion who has his wrestling credentials highlighted through through participation into the Olympics. Askren has left the sport of MMA nearly 3 years ago and was last seen in combat action when he lost a boxing match to Jake Paul back in April 2021.
Masvidal is one of the highest paid athletes by the UFC today. In 2019, Masvidal delievered an unstoppable run of back to back sensational knockout wins, which included the fastest ever KO recorded in UFC history, the one over Askren himself, that ended Askren’s undefeated run as a professional fighter which included wins over the likes of Douglas Lima, Robbie Lawler, Andrey Koreshkov, Shinya Aoki and many more. Going into the fight at UFC 239, both Askren and Masvidal shared a bad blood for each other which exists to this day.
Ben Askren takes a brutal shot over Jorge Masvidal for never having any MMA world title on his shelf
Just very recently, at UFC 278, the UFC welterweight championship was passed down to a new name as the former title holder Kamaru Usman just lost to Leon Edwards via last round head kick knockout in a rematch. As soon as Edwards became the new champion, Masvidal, who’s on a 3-fight skid, starting putting his name out for a title shot since he already has a bad blood against Edwards since 2019. Back at UFC London in early 2019, Masvidal and Edwards engaged in a brutal fist fight backstage, after which since that altercation, both have been looking to avenge each other inside the UFC Octagon.
Askren took the oppotunity to address the issue with Masivdal asking for title shot in a series of tweets. “Been off the grid camping….. why is not getting a title shot off 3 losses in a row a controversial opinion???? Also I would rather be a has been than a never was Lastly you can’t avoid someone for 3 years then try to pick a fight once they get a belt” said Askren.

What do you make of this rant by Askren on seeing Masvidal asking for a title shot? Who do you think would win if a matchup between Masivdal and Edwards eventually happens? Also, who would you give a title shot to next if not Masvidal? As of now, the fight that makes the most sense for Edwards is to eventually engage in a trilogy fight against Usman in the rematch at the location of his choice. So far, both Usman and Edwards are 1-1 in their competition.
