“I’d love to” Beneil Dariush makes an interesting proposal to Dustin Poirier
Dariush ahs called out former IC Dustin Poirier
Beneil Dariush and Dustin Poirier may not have been the fight we asked for but with the inactivity at the top of lightweight and the new generation seemingly on the fast track to catching up, we will take what we can get. Dariush was initially scheduled to face Islam Makhachev to determine the next title contender, but since Oliveira’s stripping and Dariush’s pull out the landscape at the top has changed
Dariush and Makhachev were initially scheduled to face off in February when Dariush pulled out due to a broken fibula. Bobby Green would replace him on short notice and be TKO’ed by Islam in the first round. Though Dana had plans to rebook their fight for an October Abu Dhabi event, when Charles Oliveira was demoted to no. 1 contender due to a weight miss at UFC 274, it seemed as though Islam had cut the line and made himself the challenger along with Oliveira for the lightweight belt.
Beneil Dariush thinks Dustin Poirier has lost “his fire”
This is a possibility Dariush has come to terms with and believes that if that were to happen he needs to keep his options ready, to this extent he called out former Interim Champ, Dustin Poirier. Still riding high off his back-to-back victories against Conor McGregor, Dustin would challenge Charles for his lightweight title and come up short to be submitted in the third round. Since then the Louisiana Native has been looking for his own path back to the title.
Talking to MMA Junkie Dariush revealed that apart from Conor McGregor jumping in there’s no other alternative for Oliveira than Islam. He said, “He’s not the champion, he wants to fight Conor , but I think the UFC wants to set up Islam and Charles, so it puts me kind of in limbo.” Dariush believes if Charles and Islam were to happen Dustin Poirier would be his best chance at the title, mostly because Dariush could fight in the states itself.
“A guy like Dustin Poirier makes a lot of sense. I’d love to fight him. I know he was talking about fighting in August. That’ll be great. August, September, whatever, we could go.” said the lightweight explaining he’s ready for a fight at a moment’s notice.
Dariush would also admit that his ideal opposition would be Makhachev considering he is in his “absolute prime” and that after the loss to Charles, “a little bit of the fire has been taken out under him. “ Poirier meanwhile has been targetting fights against Nate Diaz and Michael Chandler, all striking heavy fighters unlike Dariush
