One of the most entertaining and strong welterweight contenders is Khamzat Chimaev, but he has not been active lately. His last fight was against Kevin Holland at UFC 279, where he submitted Holland via D’arce choke. Since his last fight, there have been rumors of a fight with former welterweight champion and Nigerian powerhouse Kamaru Usman.

Khamzat’s teammate and training partner Azamat Dugulubgov recently posted a story on Instagram. He can be seen watching a fight that looks like Jared Cannonier vs Kelvin Gastelum at a UFC fight night event. The story was captioned, “already studying the next opponent for the Borz“. It was reposted by “Borz” himself, confirming a fight against Cannonier.

Chimaev has never fought at middleweight before, and a fight with Cannonier will not be an easy one for him. Canonnier was a fighter in the heavyweight division, and he will have the power and strength from his heavyweight days, which will trouble Chimaev. Chimaev is used to being the stronger bully in the fight, but this will not be the case with Cannonier.

Chimaev has a very impressive undefeated record of 12-0, in which he has defeated Gilbert Burns, Kevin Holland, and Li Jingliang. Whereas the “Killa Gorilla” has defeated the likes of Anderson Silva, Sean Strickland, Marvin Vettori, and Kelvin Gastelum. He also faced champion Israel Adesanya for the title at UFC 276 but lost via unanimous decision.

Kamaru Usman was one of the most dominant welterweight champions, defeating every fighter in the top ranks almost twice. Usman became the #1 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC. But after his loss to the current champion Leon Edwards at UFC 278, everything went downhill for the Nigerian Nightmare. He wrestled in a rematch against Edwards but lost again, ending his title hopes.

Usman has long expressed his wish to fight Khamzat Chimaev and has been going back and forth with Chimaev on social media. Borz took to Twitter to reply to Usman’s claim that “he has been using me for clout” to which Chimaev replied by saying, “Why you talk about me? You said you wanna fight at 185. The weight is no problem. If you are the boogeyman I am the Wolf, you wanna fight me lets fight!”

The fight between the two welterweights will be a very interesting and entertaining one. It will also earn the winner a potential shot at the welterweight gold as it is a matchup long awaited by the fans.
