“You got to fight your fight” – Carla Esparza admits boos from fans did not affect her inside the octagon

Carla Esparza talks about her fight against Rose Namajunas at UFC 274

Carla Esparza is coming off her title-winning fight against Rose Namajunas and the newly crowned champion responds to critics about her performance at UFC 274.

UFC 274 was an exciting, electric pay-per-view event from top to bottom other than the card’s co-main event, which featured the strawweight title fight between old rivals Carla Esparza and Rose Namajunas. The two fighters ran it back for the strawweight gold and put on a performance that was possibly one of the worst ever inside the UFC octagon.

The two fighters did not care to switch up their tactics from being extremely defensive with their approach will saw an uproar of criticism as Carla was named the champion after barely any action for five rounds. In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting, Esparza talks about receiving boos at the Footprint Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.

“It is kinda like what goes on my mind when I walk out, I am super focused,” said Carla on how she dealt with the boos from the crowd. The Phoenix crowd was truly hostile towards the two strawweights but Esparza being a veteran did not let that get to her and stuck with the game plan.

“To be honest, an inexperienced fighter might let the boos of the crowd make them get emotional and make stupid decisions. Sometimes the cheers can get you pumped. But as a veteran, you have to fight your fight and not let the crowd affect what the smart move to make is,” said Esparza talking to Ariel Helwani.

The commentary team was super unimpressed with the performance of both Carla and Rose. Joe Rogan even went to the extent of saying this fight was a bad example for the sport of MMA. Esparza, however, believes there was a little bit of bias involved in the commentary at UFC 274.

“To be honest the commentary, especially early on the fight, it was a combination of a little bit bias to the side of Rose…and then but I also felt like they were being real on a lot of notes about the fight in general and talking crap on it,” said Carla on the commentary from Joe Rogan, Daniel Cormier, and Jon Anik.
