“Almost like I’m fighting a different person”- Carla Esparza reflects upon her title rematch against Rose Namajunas

Rose Namajunas and Carla Esparza

The inaugural UFC women’s strawweight champion, Carla Esparza is finally set to face the UFC women’s strawweight champion, Rose Namajunas in a rematch. Namajunas defended her title against Zhang Weili at the co-main event of UFC 268 and since that fight, Esparza was in doubt about the next title shot.

Initially the UFC president, Dana White denied giving Esparza the next title shot as she was not fighting and waiting for the title shot. But recently he admitted that she is next for the title shot.

Esparza is ready to go to any extent for this rematch, even if it means for her to delay her wedding. Esparza and Namajunas faced each other for the first time in the finale of TUF, ‘Cookie Monster’ defeated her and won the inaugural UFC women’s strawweight title.

Esparza talked about this rematch during her appearance on the MMA Junkie Radio, she said, “In my whole career, I’ve never had a rematch. This is the first one. I’m really interested to see how it goes, and I’m just as motivated. It almost feels like I’m fighting a different person. I am fighting a different person in Rose because it’s been so many years. I’ve evolved so much, she’s evolved so much, so in a way it doesn’t feel like a rematch.”

“We’ve come so far, and she’s kind of gone through everyone and really improve so much and beat so many people that I think she is the champion, and she deserves to be the champion and where she’s at,” Esparza said. “So I’m definitely looking at her like she’s the one to beat, she’s No. 1, she’s the champ.”
