For Chael Sonnen, one of them is going to be the much smarter fighter than the other between Sean O’Malley and Petr Yan come UFC 280. UFC 280 is going to happen on October 22, 2022, in Fight Island, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi and the fight card will be headlined by a lightweight title clash between former champion Charles Oliveira and Dagestan’s title prospect Islam Makhachev. The co-main event is headlined by a bantamweight title bout between the current champion Aljamain Sterling and former champion TJ Dillashaw.

Within this fight card, resides the battle made on the paper between former UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan and potential UFC megastar Sean O’Malley. Yan is coming off a loss in his rematch to Sterling, via a close split decision which Yan thinks that he won and would therefore like to get into a trilogy with the current champion as soon as possible. O’Malley’s last fight ended in a no-contest due to an accidental eye poke from his side that led his opponent, Pedro Munhoz, unable to continue.

In one of the videos on his Youtube channel, Chael Sonnen talks about the announcement of the fight between Yan and O’Malley and wonders what brought O’Malley from a disappointing no-contest to the biggest opportunity in his career. For Sonnen, he senses some smart business moves being played by O’Malley. However, Sonnen begins his monologue with the stylistic matchup of the fight.

“That really is an incredible fight,” says Sonnen “One of these guys is going to get look like a fool and this is not going to be a back and forth but I don’t know who it’s gonna be. One guy is going to kick the other’s a** that’s just how the way it works… There are 2 conflicting styles [of striking]… I mean this could be the absolute breakthrough moment for Sugar Sean,” concluded Sonnen.
