“Trying to make sense of this,” Chael Sonnen surprised by Nate Diaz vs Khamzat Chimaev fight announcement
Nate Diaz- Chael Sonnen- Khamzat Chimaev
While the announcement of a fight between Nate Diaz and Khamzat Chimaev has relieved the internet of the pressure of Diaz’s last fight, Chael Sonnen seems somewhat baffled by the news. Diaz, the UFC megastar who is just one fight away from parting ways with the UFC was asking for the final fight of his current UFC contract for months and names were being thrown in rumours left and right. Some of the names were Dustin Poirier, Tony Ferguson and Conor McGregor.
However, Diaz has finally settled to fight Chimaev, an undefeated welterweight with an 11-0 record who has 10 wins via finishes. Diaz himself was open to fighting Chimaev for months as per his claims but the UFC was causing a delay for unclear reasons. Finally, both have verbally agreed to fight at UFC 279 in a five-round main event and only signing the fight deal is left up to this point.

Chael Sonnen will be in contentment if he knows the reasons behind the Diaz-Chimaev matchup
In one of the videos on his Youtube channel, MMA Legend Chael Sonnen reacts to the fight announcement in works between Diaz and Chimaev and seems somewhat surprised that out of all the potential opponents in line for Diaz, Chimaev is the chosen one. For the record, last week, Sonnen was also the first person that broke the news that Diaz has started the fight camp and seems he is nearing the finalisation of the final fight of his current UFC contract.
“I’m just trying to make sense of this,” says Sonnen “I’m picturing myself on fight week, you know we got the weigh-in, we got the special media, we got the mecca, we got all of these things, [but] why are we here?… If this is all about the promoter. This is the fight Dana wanted. The end… I’m in, that is actually a really good answer…” continues Sonnen
What do you make of Sonnen’s reaction to the Diaz-Chimaev matchup? Were you as surprised as Sonnen? Who do you think will win between Diaz and Chimaev? Irrespective of the results, Diaz will leave the UFC once and for all, what’s next for Stockton’s megastar then? Diaz has indicated multiple times that he would like to have a boxing match against Jake Paul, how do you think that fight goes?
