Welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry will face Geoff Neal at UFC 298. The Irish fighter married British-Brazilian Layla Anna-Lee and embraced Brazilian culture. As such, Garry has shifted his training camp to Chute Box in Brazil under Diego Lima. At present, Charles Oliveira is the most famous student of Lima in Chute Box. Pictures of Garry and Oliveira’s training went viral on social media lately.
The UFC just released the second episode of the UFC 298 embedded, and Lima revealed what he thought about Garry. This is what Lima said on UFC 298 embedded:
The camp with Ian was super cool. He's already a Brazilian. Everyone gets along with him, and he gets along with everyone. He's got an amazing family. I am sure the outcome will be the best one possible.Diego Lima via UFC 298 Embedded
Lima’s words became an antithesis of what the former coaches and training partners of Ian Machado Garry said. Garry had a nomadic training camp before UFC 298. He had trained at KillCliff MMA in Florida and also at Team Renegade in Birmingham. Many notable fighters like Leon Edwards and Michael Chandler, among others, did not have good things to say about Garry’s character in the gym.
Garry has attracted a lot of controversy in recent times. This was due to his marriage with his wife, who is older than him by 14 years. Sean Strickland, Kevin Holland, and Colby Covington, among others, criticized the relationship. Due to the online harassment from fans and fighters alike, Garry has shut off the comments section of his social media handles.
Ian Garry on his training camp at Chute Box in Brazil
Ian Garry has trained at numerous gyms across the globe. However, he has now found his home in Chute Box in Brazil, the home country of his wife. Diego Lima, the head coach at Chute Box, has already expressed his appreciation for Garry.
Garry also shared a similar sentiment towards his coach and training partners in Brazil. He revealed it on the recent UFC 298 embedded episode. This is what he said:
I think the biggest thing about doing camp in Brazil and training in Brazil is you feel the passion and you feel the energy, and it transfers to you, and you take it wherever you go. It's hard not to take that and translate it into fighting with a smile on your face. So yeah, that's how we're going to do this Saturday.Ian Garry via UFC 298 Embedded
The UFC had earlier scheduled a fight between Ian Machado Garry and Geoff Neal for UFC 292. However, Neal pulled out Garry’s face, Neil Magny, and won. Garry had to pull out of his fight against Vicente Luque at UFC 296 before the UFC booked Garry vs Neal again.
