“It’s all about money”, Charles Oliveira eager to fight Conor McGregor at welterweight

Conor McGregor and Charles Oliveira

Former champion and pound-for-pound number four Charles Oliveira has been wanting a battle with Conor McGregor for quite some time. Despite being promised a crack at the UFC lightweight championship in his next fight, Charles is willing to forego it in favour of a bout with the Irishman.

Oliveira’s title was withdrawn after weighing half a pound above the 155-pound championship limit. The Brazilian went on to defeat Arizona’s Justin Gaethje in the main event, and despite losing the championship, UFC President Dana White has stated that Charles would be given the opportunity to reclaim it.

Oliveira has been linked to a lightweight title bout against Islam Makhachev at UFC 281 in October. Makhachev has been clamouring for a championship shot and should cash in on his ten-fight undefeated record.

Conor McGregor has been planning his comeback since fracturing his leg last July against Dustin Poirier. McGregor also stated that he would like to fight ‘Do Bronx’ following his most recent victory, comparing himself to famous Brazilian fighters such as Jose Aldo and Diego Brandao.

Oliveira is open to a bout with the former two-weight champion, but only for one reason. Oliveira is ready to step up to welterweight to face McGregor because he isn’t interested in battling at 155lb after gaining on a lot of muscle during his hiatus. He informs Helen Yee, With Conor, I would fight him at 170. It’s all about money and I would like to to make this money fight with him.”

The Brazilian, who was in Las Vegas for the UFC 276, even reiterated his offer to the Irishman telling BT Sport, “Hey Conor, I want this fight. I know you want it so are you going to come or are you going to run? I know you’re running, so I’m here. Are you going to sign the contract or not?”
