Tony Ferguson and Charles Oliveira embrace after their fight at UFC 256
The only man Charles Oliveira has not managed to finish in his 11-fight win streak is Tony Ferguson. It’s not that Charles didn’t try, in fact in the closing seconds of round one, Charles secured an armbar on Tony that would have left the toughest humans on the planet quitting while screaming blue murder. However, many have doubts if Tony is even human and Charles Oliveira probably respects him for it.
At the undercard for UFC 274, we witnessed Tony Ferguson get knocked out cold, something many never expected to happen no matter how low Tony’s career went. If that wasn’t bad enough, the knockout came at a time when Tony had looked like his former self, for the first time in almost 2 years and 12 rounds of fighting. Landing a flush hook on Chandler that stumbled the former Bellator Champion and also working the signature “El Cucuy” elbows from his back when Chandler took him down.
Ever the humble fighter, Charles Oliveira extended an olive branch to Tony to come train with the current champion in his hometown. The Champion took to Twitter to show his love and appreciation for Tony saying, “ We’re among big dogs, up&downs are part of our journeys. I admire you a lot @tonyfergusonxt. You have the history inside the Octagon. Head up “El Cucuy”!” This isn’t the first time that Charles has shown his love for Tony, as the duo were seen hyping each other up, before the face-offs at the press conference at UFC 262. Charles then said to Tony, “It’s time, It’s time you win bro” after which Tony hugged Charles while picking him up.
Charles Oliveira says Tony Ferguson is his brother as he invites him to train together
The Champ continued, “If you wish, let’s train together in ChuteBoxe’s headquarters in São Paulo for your nxt fight. You’re a brother!” inviting Tony to come train at the iconic Chute Boxe Academy that gave us legends like Wanderlei Silva, Shogun Rua, and Anderson Silva.
Tony replied showing his appreciation in the most “El Cucuy” way possible, saying “I’m glad you listened Way to stay focused Chuck!” he further went on to say, Charles shouldn’t let his team make him miss weight again. He ended the tweet by saying, “We’ll see you soon kid, be good- Champ”
After the devastating knockout loss Tony suffered at UFC 274, some are doubtful if he’ll ever be back in action. On the contrary, many more including the current champion think El Cucuy has more fight left in him and will only leave the game on his own terms.
