“Win or lose he’s profitable” Charles Oliveira states his reasons to aim for Conor McGregor fight next
Charles and Conor have verbally agreed to the fight on multiple occasions
Charles Oliveira made clear that Conor McGregor is not a name he has any hesitation to go up against. The Brazilian even called out the Irishman right after his victory over Justin Gaethje at UFC 274. Now Charles Oliveira says he would like to face no one more than McGregor for the vacant lightweight title.
Oliveira went through the top ranks of the division like a chainsaw through butter. In a span of a year, Charles defeated 3 big names like Michael Chandler, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje, it would make sense for him to compete against McGregor and make his resume as champion, near-identical to that of the consensus lightweight GOAT, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Charles Oliveira feels Islam Makhachev needs one more fight before the title shot, considers Conor McGregor a suitable opponent in the meantime
Although Charles is realistic and knows it’s not just about legacy when the towering factor is the amount of attention McGregor brings in. During a recent interview with ESPN he clarified his thoughts about a possible fight against McGregor and his motivations for it.
“It would put a lot of money in my pocket, and right now that’s the most important thing.” said Oliveira claiming that while the fight would also add to his legacy and affect the way his story is told, it’s the money that triumphs all. He continued, “Regardless, if he’s coming from defeat or not, he’s a guy who’s made history, so I think it would be great, but it’s not just up to me.” clarifying that if it were upto Oliveira he would already be facing McGregor.
Oliveira then talked about how important it is to him that his daughter is set up for a comfortable life and how a McGregor fight checks all the boxes for him. “Everyone knows that fighting Conor is very profitable. And Conor knows that, that everyone wants to fight him.” said the former Lightweight Champion.
When asked about the prospect of facing Islam Makhachev, Oliveira said that while he thinks he’s a well rounded fighter, Islam still neeeds to fight a top opponent before he finds himself in title contention. Oliveira also claimed that after Islam racks up one more victory he’s willing to face him in Brazil or Islam’s hometown in Russia.
