“The champion is here” – Charles Oliveira welcomes Alexander Volkanovski to challenge him for the lightweight title
Charles Oliveira responds to Alexander Volkanovski's call out for the lightweight belt
Alexander Volkanovski is all ready to climb up the weight division and challenge for the lightweight belt. The “uncrowned champ” Charles Oliveira has finally responded to the featherweight champion’s ambitions.
Alexander Volkanovski has etched his name as one of the greatest UFC fighters of all time and possibly the greatest featherweight of all time. The fighter from Australia has ripped through fighters in his career and has been undefeated as a UFC fighter. His recent win against Max Holloway guaranteed the Aussie a pass to move up a weight class and challenge for the lightweight belt.
Even the UFC president Dana White had given Volkanovski the green light to try and become the double champ. Volkanovski, after his win at UFC 276 made it clear that he wants to fight for the lightweight belt which he completely deserves to have a shot at after all his feats in the promotion. Charles Oliveira, who was stripped of the title following a weigh-in mishap at UFC 274 has shown interest in fighting Volkanovski for the lightweight belt.
Charles Oliveira warns Alexander Volkanovski ahead of the lightweight challenge
“The champion has a name and it is Charles Oliveira. If he [Volkanovski] wants to go up, come, I’m here. He needs to think about it because it is a different challenge for him and a different division but I’m here. I am the champ,” said Charles talking to ‘mainevent’.
Charles is yet to reclaim his belt after his weigh-in mishap. The fighter is in talks to fight either Islam Makhachev or Conor McGregor for the lightweight belt. However, Volkanovski believes if he is cleared fit, he would want the privilege of fighting directly for the belt rather than waiting to see who the winner of the next title fight is.
Volkanovski is currently #2 on the pound-for-pound list and is claimed by many to be the P4P king. Alex does not look like he’s going to stop getting better and he could very well manage to take the lightweight belt. Volkanovski promises to keep both the divisions active if he ever wins the 155-pound belt.
