“We’re fighting the best, and Colby’s next”- Coach reveals beating Colby Covington is necessary for Khamzat Chimaev’s legacy

Colby Covington will "kill the hype" of Khamzat

Khamzat Chimaev’s stocks are higher than ever following his win against #2 ranked welterweight contender Gilbert Burns. The rising superstar has everyone in the welterweight division on hold as he comes knocking on the doors of top-ranked fighters. The next fighter on the list of Khamzat is another blockbuster fighter, Colby Covington.

Leading up to UFC 273, Dana White suggested that the winner of the Chimaev vs Burns fight would take on Covington in a headliner fight for UFC on ABC. The stage doesn’t get bigger than that for someone like Chimaev. The fighter went to absolute war leaving bloodshed inside the octagon against Burns showing the world his heart to stay in the fight and brawl.

Surprisingly we haven’t heard from Colby since Chimaev’s win but “Borz” won’t rest until he provokes a response from his rival. Many claimed Colby is a bad matchup for Khamzat, because of his relentless cardio, however, Khamzat believes with a few adjustments he can definitely stop Colby in his tracks.

Khamzat’s coach recently appeared in an interview with Ariel Helwani from The MMA Hour, he believes Khamzat has a lot of room for improvement, and a fight against Covington is almost inevitable. He said, “I would like to see him fight Colby. Colby would be a good fight. We’re after fighting the best, and Colby’s the next step up, and we keep on going.”

Talking about Khamzat’s future, he said, “This is where I have to use my experience now and hold him back, because fights like that take a little bit of time for the body to recover. I would like him to fight maybe in September, October, somewhere there. If he listens to me.”
