The main event of UFC 296 left a bad taste in the mouths of fight fans. After all the hype and drama surrounding the fight, it turned out to be a dud. Ray Longo is the head coach of the Serra-Longo fight team on Long Island. He passionately criticized Colby Covington following his performance at UFC 296. Longo criticized his behavior both inside and outside the octagon on an episode of the Anik & Florian Podcast.

Longo’s disdain for Covington stems from a prior incident in which Covington made needless threats against UFC analyst Jon Anik. Covington’s pre-fight trash talk reached a frightening level when he insulted Leon Edwards’ late father. According to Longo, this crossed a boundary and went beyond the allowed parameters of promoting a fight. This is what he had to say:

Colby, you’re sucking the f****** life out of the community. Like a leech on society, and now you’re attacking this guy. It’s just too much for me. I don’t care for it. And, man, talk about karma, because what a piece of s*** that fight was. I mean, the guy did absolutely nothing and to be able to take a pro-Colby crowd, and by the end of the fight have the crowd against you, good luck, my man.

Longo went on to say that Covington’s actions remained harmful to the MMA community. He questioned Covington’s conduct, implying that the fighter may come to regret his actions in the long term.

Covington’s defeat at UFC 296 was his third failed effort to become the undisputed UFC welterweight belt. This puts his record in his past five fights to 2-3. Despite the defeat, Covington stated that his next opponent would be Stephen Thompson.
