Fans were excited to see Cody Garbrandt return to the Bantamweight division where he was previously a champion. He was expected to fight Rani Yahya who is known for being a submission specialist. The fight was scheduled to take place at the upcoming UFC event which is scheduled for July 9. Although there were no official announcements, many reliable sources had confirmed the fight was intended to happen after a mutual decision of the fighters.

Garbrandt was originally a 135 pounder and defeated Dominick Cruz at UFC 207 to win the championship. But soon lost the belt and had consecutive losses which forced him to do something different. In his last fight at UFC 269, Garbrandt made his flyweight debut and fought rising star Kai Kara-France. He lost the fight in the first round via TKO and was extremely disappointed.

On the other hand, his opponent Yahya, could have gotten the biggest win of his career if the fight would have gone his way. The Brazilian was looking great lately and had wins over Kang and Ray Rodriguez. With 21 professional submission wins this fight would have been a treat for the fight fans. But now it seems like it will not be the case.
