Colby Covington isn’t convinced of Jorge Masvidal’s retirement. He accuses Masvidal of faking retirement in order to take steroids. Masvidal had announced his intentions of taking retirement, prior to facing Gilbert Burns.
The UFC veteran announced his retirement at UFC 287 at his home ground in Miami. After a loss to Gilbert Burns by unanimous decision, Masvidal announces his retirement and subsequently retires from the organization.
Masvidal and Covington don’t see eye to eye and Masvidal had earlier pledged to eliminate Covington from the UFC before retiring. Thus Covington isn’t convinced of the sincerity of Masvidal’s retirement. Covington was present at the T-Mobile arena at the most anticipated Ryan Garcia versus Gervonta Davis fight. There, in an interview with Inside Fighting, Covington accuses Jorge Masvidal of faking retirement. He said Masvidal did so to escape the USADA testing pool in order to take some steroids. Colby Covington guarantees Masvidal’s comeback to the UFC octagon.
“I took away his confidence and his ego. He hasn’t been the same fighter,” Covington said. “It’s a fake retirement. We all know people in the UFC who don’t retire. He’ll get out the USADA pool, probably go do some steroids, and come back.” Jorge and Covington frequently exchange jibes at each other following their bitter rivalry. “He doesn’t know how to make money any other way… I can guarantee you he’ll be back to get a paycheck, “Covington adds.
Colby Covington vs Leon Edwards for UFC Welterweight title
Colby Covington is expecting to face UFC Welterweight champion Leon Edwards in a bout for the welterweight title. This news hasn’t come without backlash, especially from among the fighters in the UFC. Covington was present as a backup for the Kamaru Usman versus Leon Edwards weigh-in
UFC champion Leon Edwards spoke out against Colby competing for the title to which he responds, “It’s about the time, as the undisputed, undefeated champion… He’s been crying, ‘oh, I deserve this, oh I deserve…’. No, you don’t deserve sh*t,” he told via Submission Radio.
As of the moment, there is no information on whether or not the match is official. But it’s anticipated that Colby and Leon will face off in a competition this summer in England. Covington asserts that his belt will be taken away from him by the promotion business if Edwards declines to compete against him.
