Former Interim UFC Welterweight Champion Colby Covington went a little off the rails to call out UFC veteran Matt Brown as a drug addict. Matt Brown has stated that Colby Covington would cease fighting if he lost to Leon Edwards. This is because he thinks Covington is not built like him. This has riled up Covington to wage a war of wards against Brown. Earlier in the year, Brown had also urged Edwards to take up the Covington fight. He felt that it would be a piece of cake for Edwards.
“Matt Brown, or whatever his name is…you know he’d be in a nicer house house and have more money in the bank, if he didn’t spend it all on drugs“, retorted Covington in an interview with Submission Radio. “I made good decisions in my life. You know, I am at this point in my career because you know I had discipline; self control. Something you know nothing about, cause you are a drug addict“.
For Covington, this is a do-or-die situation, as it is his third attempt at the welterweight gold. At least that is the prominent consensus amongst fans. In a recent episode of The Fighter vs. The Writer, Brown took that a step further and called his mettle into question. Brown expressed concerns about Covington. He said that while he can bounce back even after ten losses and loves the sport, Covington has not fought for 2 years. Brown believes Covington is in the fight game just for the money.
Covington will make his return in-ring after a long hiatus. The last big bout that he had was against peer Jorge Masvidal, on Mar.6, 2022. He defeated Masvidal with a unanimous decision win. He will face off against welterweight champion Edwards, at UFC 296, on Dec.6 at the T-Mobile Arena.
Colby Covington Vs Matt Brown squabble generates buzz
Welterweight contender Colby Covington considered one of the best 170-pound fighters within the promotion was involved in a verbal squabble with Matt Brown. Brown went about predicting Covington’s future, and not in a flattering fashion. Covington has snapped back with thoughts of his own, which have generated quite the fan reactions.
Brown has been overtly candid about his struggles with addiction and drug abuse in the past. But that does not provide him a leeway with Covington, who has been known to be a loudmouth.
Covington is already considering an Islam Makhachev matchup for a champion vs. champion clash. That is, should he be successful in capturing the belt. As such, he is eying the title with no plans to retire anytime soon. Moreover, he thinks that Brown is “dumb” for even considering a notion like that.
