Colby Covington faces welterweight champion Leon Edwards for the 170lbs gold at UFC 296. At 17-3 MMA and 12-3 UFC, Covington earned his most recent highlight against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272. Colby’s outside-the-octagon feud with Masvidal made his return to the UFC much longer.
In the build-up to the matchup, Covington has remained critical of his opponent, Leon Edwards. He recently openly dissed the fighter in an interview with ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto. During a recent interview with All Out Fighting, Covington had to weigh in on Edwards as a fighter and person. He said:
As a person, Leon Scott - or "Low IQ Leon" - what's his grade level, what's his level of education? Because I swear that guy is a mumbling fumbling idiot. He is literally always drooling on himself. So as a person I think that guy is just a waste of f**king chromosomes! Waste of space...
Covington’s lopsided decision win against Masvidal helped him retain the ranking in the top five. Colby did serve as backup for the welterweight bouts between Edwards and Kamaru Usman. This earned him the title shot. The fighter had recently also criticized Edwards for not earning it the hard way against Usman, unlike him.
Covington will need to win the bout at UFC 296 as it will likely be his final title shot. He had two shots at the title before and this would become the third one. With a stacked welterweight division with worthy contenders, Colby might not get another crack at the title.
Colby Covington states he is ready for Leon Edwards’ cheating
Colby Covington has nothing good to say about the current welterweight champion. He faces Leon “Rocky” Edwards at UFC 296. In the build-up to the welterweight bout, the fighter has berated the opposition numerous times now. Edwards returns to action after a victorious title defense against Kamaru Usman at UFC 286.
In a recent interview with All Out Fighting, “Chaos” recently dissed at the opponent’s intellect. Additionally, he also mentioned being ready for Edwards’s cheating. Check out what he said below:
Colby has done his very best to promote the upcoming title fight. The continued attacks on Edwards has increased fan anticipation for UFC 296. Only time will tell if Colby can back up his words on fight night.
