Following a unanimous decision loss to Leon Edwards at UFC 296, Colby Covington has set his eyes on a “premier matchup” against Stephen Thompson. Despite Thompson’s loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov in the same event, Covington viewed the two as the obvious next step. He also implied his desire not to fight Shavkat. However, he thought Rakhmonov would be a better matchup than Belal Muhammad against Leon Edwards.

In the post-fight press conference, Covington touched on the subject of his next fight. He believed Stephen Thompson was a bigger name than Shavkat and would want that fight. When asked who has the better chance of beating Leon, Muhammad, or Shavkat Rakhmonov, this is what he said:

Probably Sh*trat [Showkat Rakhmonov]. Probably because we saw the first fight with Bailey the racist [Belal Muhammad]. And who wants to put a racist in a main event PPV title fight.

Looking ahead, Colby Covington revealed his desire to return to the octagon in early 2024. He emphasized his desire to remain active and relevant in the highly competitive welterweight division. Time will tell whether the UFC will grant Covington’s demand for a fight against Thompson. Given this, the callout sets the setup for possible fireworks in the coming months.

In the middle of all this, Belal Muhammad, number 2 in the welterweight division, is regarded as not “PPV worthy” by Colby Covington. The first fight between Edwards and Muhammad ended on a bad note due to a horrible eye poke by Edwards. What the UFC has in store for Edwards’ next defense now remains to be seen.

Colby Covington is adamant that he won against Leon Edwards and blames loss on judges

Following his recent loss to Leon Edwards at UFC 296, Colby Covington voiced discontent with the judges’ decision. He blamed his setback on what he saw to be prejudice against him. Covington commented on the scoring in the post-fight news conference. He claimed that the judges’ prejudice against him stemmed from his support for former President Donald Trump. He further claimed to have won rounds 3, 4 and 5. Colby has a history of making absurd excuses after losing in fights. This time, it was no different.

Covington remained positive about his future in the UFC and set his sights on a potential fight with Stephen Thompson. He indicated interest in fighting Thompson, citing the latter’s pre-fight remarks and verbal attacks.
