“He took Donald Trump’s heat!” Colby Covington’s ‘MAGA’ gimmick destroyed by top MMA journo

Colby Covington hyped up his fight against Leon Edwards as much as he could. He came back to fighting after a long layoff and got the attention of everyone through his self-assertive personality. Also, he used his alliance with Donald Trump to bring in a narrative of ‘MAGA’ to his fight. However, he received a lot of criticism from the MMA world after his underwhelming performance at UFC 296.

As such, popular journalist Ariel Helwani fired shots at ‘Chaos’ for using other people to gain traction. Ariel Helwani in his recent MMA Hour Show trashed Colby Covington for using popular names to bring attention to himself. He said that Covington felt apathetic and garnered eyes using brash means. As such, he mentioned about Covington’s support of Donald Trump and his usage of Kurt Angle’s music as a marketing tool. Here is what he said:

He (Colby Covington) took Donald Trump's heat and put it on himself cause no one cared about him one way or the other... Let me take Kurt Angle's music cause it says 'You Su**' and then I'll get that heat. People were apathetic to him and now he played this character and then he took everyone else's heat.

Colby Covington embraced the heel persona to bring more attention to him. He was once on the verge of getting cut from the UFC for not getting much traction. So, he flipped his character and started to act brash and trash-talk. Although it was successful, it backfired on him in his recent outing against Leon Edwards. As such, Ariel Helwani didn’t hold back in exposing Covington.

One instance that backfired hugely was when Colby Covington made a brash comment about Leon Edwards’ late father at the UFC 296 presser. However, the hype around the fight only increased. But, the fight didn’t hold up to fans’ expectations as ‘Chaos’ couldn’t walk the talk. Now, he expressed his interest in fighting Stephen Thompson next.

Donald Trump leaves the arena before Colby Covington’s octagon speech

Colby Covington was an ardent follower of former US President Donald Trump. Likewise, Trump was a great fan of MMA and supported ‘Chaos’ in his pursuit of becoming a UFC champion.

So, Trump made his appearance at the T-Mobile arena to support Covington in his fight against Leon Edwards at UFC 296. However, ‘Chaos’ lost the fight and Trump left the arena even before Covington finished his octagon speech.

After the decision of the fight was announced, Donald Trump was seen making his way out of the arena. It was when Colby Covington gave his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. In the interview, he mentioned about the support he received from Trump and promoted the ‘MAGA’ message. Although Trump was there to listen to this statement, he soon made his way out even before ‘Chaos’ finished his speech.

Donald Trump and Colby Covington had been associated for a long time now and supported each other in their pursuits. As such, Covington promised to be back after a loose performance at UFC 296. Also, he was keen on promoting Trump for his next presidential elections in 2024.
