WATCH: When Conor McGregor caused HAVOC inside Bellator octagon
Conor McGregor (R) yells at Marc Goddard (L) in 2017
Conor McGregor has one of the most ideally suited nicknames in MMA. The name “Notorious” fits the bill not only inside the cage but outside it as well.
A reason for McGregor’s popularity is the way he markets himself – the brash, loud mouthed Irishman has created a highlight reel of moments where he has backed up his trash talk. Case in point, he literally foreshadowed KOing Jose Aldo stiff within seconds.
His exploits outside the cage are pretty well documented as well – he’s been arrested multiple times, from punching an old man to speeding in his Bentley, it seems like he’s been at odds with the law quite regularly.
One such moment caught on tape exemplifies why his nickname is so well suited to him. In a Bellator event in 2017, when his teammate Charlie Ward ended his fight early with a knockout, McGregor jumped into the octagon to embrace him.
However, a moment of shared passion became sour pretty fast, as the Irishman could then be seen squaring up and verbally mouthing off to Marc Goddard, the referee of the fight.
The reason for this, he explained later in an Instagram post. He said, “The referee Marc Godard was making a horrendous decision in trying to pick an unconscious fighter up off the floor and force the fight to continue into the second round.” [H/T MMAFighting]

Conor McGregor could return to the octagon in 2023
While Conor McGregor is known for his exploits the world over, what originally made him famous was his trash talk and his superb fighting ability. A featherweight earlier in his career, he had one of the fastest left jabs, which could end a fighter’s night early if they did not pay heed to it.
However, McGregor has seen a slump in popularity of late. And much of is can be down to his recent losses. Since 2017, when his stardom was at its peak, given that he boxed Floyd Mayweather, McGregor has lost three times and won just once in the octagon. His losses came to Khabib Nurmagomedov, and twice to Dustin Poirier, while he beat a declining Donald Cerrone.
His recent loss at the hands of Dustin Poirier was exceptionally gnarly. While countering, he stepped back on his leg and broke his shin.
Since the injury, we are yet to hear concrete news of the star’s highly anticipated return. Although he has started posting clips of him training MMA and boxing, it is unknown when and against whom he could fight. However, 2023 seems to be the inevitable time of his return. Dana White has hinted at this saying that he could be back in 2023.
A few names, like Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler have been thrown into the mix. Only time will tell who Conor McGregor makes his much-anticipated return against!
