Conor McGregor’s bad performance at UFC 257 was the reason Khabib Nurmagomedov never returned to the UFC
The departure of Khabib Nurmagomedov from the UFC in 2020 left many fans disappointed. Although he had initially stated that he wouldn’t return, there were possibilities of a comeback if an enticing opportunity arose in the lightweight division.
In a recent interview, Nurmagomedov’s longtime coach, Javier Mendez, disclosed that even after his retirement, the UFC continued to pursue his return and that he remained in the USADA testing pool. Mendez revealed that during UFC 257, Nurmagomedov was waiting for something remarkable to occur that would motivate his comeback, but unfortunately, nothing transpired.
“He said, ‘If someone showed me something spectacular, then maybe I’ll come back.’ It was Conor vs. Poirier that night… He said if something excited him on that card, then maybe he’d consider it. But it never happened. The UFC was pushing him, but nothing excited him, so it was a no go,” Mendez shared.
It appears that Khabib Nurmagomedov was interested in facing opponents like Conor McGregor or Dustin Poirier, but after witnessing how the fight concluded, his enthusiasm dwindled.
