The whole combat sports world was shocked when Netflix announced Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul. Given that the legendary boxer’s professional career ended almost 19 years ago, the fighting community couldn’t believe the news. However, it was official, and the two parties signed a contract. As such, MMA superstar Conor McGregor reacted to the announcement.
Conor McGregor is currently occupied with the promotional responsibilities of his Hollywood debut. While speaking with a media outlet, an interviewer asked about his thoughts concerning Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson. ‘The Notorious’ couldn’t even comprehend that the 57-year-old Mike Tyson was returning and expressed utter disappointment. However, as a fan of the boxing legend, he affirmed he would be supporting him. Here is what he said:
Oh, jeez, it's a bit strange. The interest is low - I don't know. I don't really, I don't understand it. I always root for Mike (Tyson).Conor McGregor (via X-Championship Rounds)
Conor McGregor couldn’t deduce the reason for this matchup and stumbled upon his words to explain his feelings about it. The fighting community shared the same feeling upon hearing the news for the first time. Mike Tyson last entered the boxing ring in 2020 for an exhibition bout with fellow legend Roy Jones Jr. Although he looked good, a bout with a much younger Jake Paul wasn’t a fair game, and McGregor insinuated the same sentiment.
While ‘Iron’ has announced his return to his combat sports, Conor McGregor still doesn’t have an official date for his return. According to his earlier announcements, he will fight Michael Chandler in June for International Fight Week.
UFC CEO Dana White reacts to Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul
Dana White and Mike Tyson go a long way and were really good friends. As such, concerning his friend’s health, White had often opposed Tyson’s interest in boxing again. Many retired fighters itch to return and mostly make an unsuccessful return to their sport. The UFC CEO didn’t want Tyson to have the same fate. As such, White was extremely disappointed amidst the announcement of Tyson vs. Jake Paul.
In his recent appearance at the UFC 299 press conference, Dana White addressed the hot topic of Mike Tyson returning to fight Jake Paul. White, much like Conor McGregor, was confused about the matchup and didn’t know what to say. He just pointed out the age difference between Paul and ‘Iron’ to ridicule the matchmaking. Here is what he said:
Mike’s 60 man, I don’t know…I love Mike Tyson, personally as a friend and he’s one of my favorite athletes of all time. I don’t know, let’s see what he can go in there, put together a training camp… – (There’s) 31 years age difference.
