Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov had one of the most intense rivalry in UFC history. It remains on par with the rivalry between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier. In recent years, McGregor and Khabib have been relatively quiet since the Dagestan fighter retired. On the other hand, McGregor has not fought since 2021. However, the Irishman reignited the rivalry with Khabib by taking a shot at his cousin, Umar Nurmagomedov.
Conor McGregor went on Twitter to mock Umar for pulling out of his main vent fight against Cory Sandhagen. In a deleted tweet, McGregor wrote, “Runs in the family.” This is a direct aim at Khabib, as the former lightweight champion used to pull out of contests on multiple occasions. Khabib pulled out three times against Tony Ferguson, including UFC 247, that almost got canceled due to Covid.
Dana White and the UFC will now look for an opponent for Cory. Whoever takes the fight on short notice could benefit a lot. On the other hand, McGregor continues to tease fans with a potential comeback this year. Many believe a return for the Irishman this year could be unlikely due to not enrolling in the USADA testing pool. Recently, news broke out that McGregor got into a brawl in a Liverpool pub.
On the other hand, Umar Nurmagomedov has another setback to overcome. Dana White has repeatedly stated that no one was willing to fight him. Sandhagen accepted the fight when he did not have to. Umar is not ranked in the top 10, whereas Sandhagen remained in the top 5 of the bantamweight division. Fight fans hope to see Umar back competing soon.
Prime Conor McGregor was a master of timing
In his prime, Conor McGregor had one of the best striking skills in all of the UFC. The Irish superstar utilized the karate stance to land kicks and set up his boxing. However, above all, the timing of McGregor became his biggest strength inside an octagon.
He perfectly timed his left hook against Jose Aldo at UFC 194. Aldo did not even see them coming and got knocked out. In his lightweight title fight against Eddie Alvarez, McGregor outclassed the American with crisp striking throughout the fight.
The finishing sequence in the second round happened because McGregor managed to time his strikes perfectly. The four-punch combo to finish the fight remains one of the most beautiful fights ending in the history of MMA.
