Conor McGregor accuses how Nate Diaz tried every possible way to avoid their UFC 196 fight

Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor

In 2016, Conor McGregor fought Nate Diaz and it started one of the most popular rivalries in UFC history. McGregor was coming off an incredible title win against Jose Aldo and was at the top of his career. On the other hand, Diaz was already a superstar in the UFC with a massive fan following.

The fight took place at 170 pounds as Diaz failed to make the weight in time due to short notice. However, it didn’t stop McGregor who was keen to move up but it didn’t go well for the ‘Notorious’. The fight was entertaining as both the fighters were trying their best to gain an advantage. Nate looked incredible and landed lots of combinations. In the second round, a ground exchange resulted in Diaz being at the top which allowed the Stockton native to secure a rear naked choke. Mcgregor had no other options but to tap and suffer his first ever UFC loss.

During the conversation, McGregor was asked about his welterweight debut and moving weight classes to fight Diaz. According to McGregor, they had to give more money to Diaz to fight and there were also some weight issues. “When my previous opponent pulled out then everyone went silent. So, Diaz was the only one that engaged in the conversation but even then he was looking for his ways,” said McGregor.

“He wasn’t happy with the money, so we resolved the money issue. Then he said he couldn’t make the weight, he could only make 160 pounds. We agreed to that, then he came back again and said I can only make 165 pounds. So, then I said ‘Relax, get comfortable, put your feet up. You can weigh in 170 pounds on the scales. The weight means no difference to me. I’m still gonna slap the head off him.’ So, I just need the man to show up. In true warfare, weight is a non-issue.”

McGregor has always been the fighter who doesn’t necessarily care about weight. The double champion has fought in different weight classes and has performed well. Currently, it seems like McGregor, if he decides to come back, will remain in the welterweight division.
