UFC Live discusses Alexander Volkanovski challenging Islam Makhachev and other important headlines

UFC 294 has witnessed significant changes in its main and co-main events. During a recent discussion on UFC Live, Karyn Bryant, Michael Chiesa, and Din Thomas delved into these developments. Islam Makhachev was initially supposed to defend his lightweight title against Charles Oliveira in the main event. However, unforeseen circumstances forced Oliveira to withdraw due to an injury that required stitches. As a result, featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has boldly stepped up to challenge Makhachev for the lightweight title.

Din Thomas believed Volkanovski had previously shown he could compete effectively at a higher weight class and now had an exceptional opportunity to prove himself again. Similarly, the co-main event underwent a significant transformation. Initially, Paulo Costa was set to face Khamzat Chimaev. Former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman stepped up to the challenge to meet Chimaev at middleweight. Michael Chiesa expressed heightened enthusiasm for the co-main event, citing Usman’s remarkable power and dominance. He also emphasized that Usman’s move to middleweight allows him to compete without the constraints of a weight cut, potentially enhancing his overall performance.

Additionally, beginning on January 1, 2024, UFC will cease its partnership with the USADA for its anti-doping program. Both Chiesa and Thomas lauded this decision, highlighting the UFC’s dedication to strengthening its anti-doping measures while simplifying the logistical aspects for fighters under the new program.
