UFC 229 is the highest-selling UFC PPV of all time. The iconic event featured the lightweight title bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor. Many fans remember the build-up, fight, and aftermath even after five years. On the day of its five-year anniversary, Conor McGregor went on Twitter to throw shade at Khabib’s teammates.
Conor McGregor wrote “Dead rats in the swamp.” Khabib defeated McGregor in the fourth round via submission. After the bout, Khabib charged at McGregor’s corner to attack Dillon Danis. In the aftermath, corner members of Khabib hopped into the octagon and attacked McGregor. However, McGregor held his own and landed some good strikes back at the Dagestani fighters.
McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov have gone their separate ways since then. Khabib defended the lightweight title two more times and retired. He submitted Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 and choked out Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. Due to the death of his beloved father, Khabib’s mother asked him to retire. 2020 was the last time Khabib fought in the octagon. He left the sport with a legacy of having faced no defeats.
On the other hand, McGregor has not retired. Nevertheless, he remained inactive for the most part due to a horrible injury he suffered against Dustin Poirier in 2021. Since the fight at UFC 229, McGregor has fought twice with a win and two losses. He is slated to return to fight “Iron” Michael Chandler next year. The duo could possibly headline the iconic UFC 300 card.
