Conor McGregor‘s list of KO highlights is extensive. This includes finishes over Jose Aldo, Dustin Poirier, and Chad Mendes at featherweight, Eddie Alvarez at lightweight. And also Donald Cerrone at welterweight. “The Notorious”, called so for a reason, is to return at UFC’s International Fight Week event on June 29. Despite being pushed hard for UFC 300, he now faces expectant rival and TUF Season 31 opposition Michael Chandler. Now, bantamweight Sean O’Malley has weighed in on the 22-6 former champion’s future prospects.
McGregor has been on the shelf for over 29 months, after UFC 264. Meanwhile, 17-1-0 “Suga” handed previous titleholder Aljamain Sterling a massive defeat at UFC 292 to win the 135lbs gold. Stepping into 2024, he has already divulged his aspirations to achieve McGregor-like fame and fandom. Speaking on an episode of his Timbo SugarShow, here’s what O’Malley had to say:
Chandler probably walks around max 185. Conor, probably 190, whatever. Interesting matchup there at 185, and if he knocks out Chandler at 185, he’ll have a knockout at ‘45, knockout at ‘55 … Donald Cerrone, knockout at ‘70, knockout at 185. That would be legendary...Sean O’Malley on Timbo SugarShow
In a recent sitdown with ESPN MMA’s Megan Olivi, O’Malley talked about his future matchup, this past year, and McGregor. In the interview, O’Malley responded to the haters who complained about his admiration for McGregor. He gave the Irishman credit for his stature and his belief in himself. As such, he had previously expressed his interest in becoming a double champion and getting into boxing just like ‘The Notorious’. Check out McGregor validating his support, below.
In one of his recent IG stories, the fighter reaffirmed “Making history everyday“, on O’Malley’s 4-division KO proposition. After bouncing back to action in almost 3 years, it is very much possible for the fighter to add another feat to his legacy.
Sean O’Malley thinks he’s approaching Conor McGregor’s level of stardom
Stepping into 2024, bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley has had big plans. Before making his maiden title defense soon, late in 2023 “Suga” already hinted at aiming for big levels of fame and fandom. Now, the fighter aims to become ‘as big as Conor McGregor’ in 2024.
The Dana White’s Contender Series graduate is on a back-to-back win streak. He makes his first title defense at UFC 299. Correspondingly, he is already settled on his surefire victory. What works against the fighter is not his overt confidence, but getting compared to “The Notorious” at all times. Conversely, O’Malley accepts all of it as he is a big fan of McGregor’s work. Check out what he said during a recent interview with ESPN MMA:
I’m hoping to get another one in by the end of the year and be the biggest star in sports, not just combat sports...I think I go out there and put two beautiful performances together. I will be as big as Conor...Sean O’Malley in an interview with ESPN MMA
O’Malley’s last victory came by way of a fateful right-hand KO. Now, with more highlight performances, “Suga” is sure that he can cash in on such aforementioned comparisons. Funnily enough, recently O’Malley lauded McGregor’s chances at a four-division knockout on his return later this year.
