Conor McGregor made more money than all the UFC fighters ever. The former two-division champion’s wealth skyrocketed after his boxing debut against Floyd Mayweather. Now, the Irishman owns luxurious vehicles, pubs, and watches among other things. McGregor recently did an interview for GQ Sports in which he revealed essential things in his life. However, fans panned the interview on social media as McGregor promoted his luxurious lifestyle rather than revealing the essentials.
Nonetheless, McGregor also shared interesting stories about his life. He revealed how Proper 12 Whiskey came into existence and his belief in god and religion, among other things. Of all the stories, the most interesting was the first time he wore a luxurious Rolex watch. This is what he said about it.
Before anything, I was getting the fake ones... my first ever real watch that I had got was a gift post UFC Dublin, which was in 2013. And it was a gift for me from Lorenzo Fertitta....he gifted me a solid gold Rolex Sky Dweller. So after the belt, I won the belt, got a knockout in the first round,,,,, they gifted me this Rolex, it was my first real watch.Conor McGregor via GQ Sports
McGregor further added that he employed the ‘fake it till you make it’ strategy when he was not rich. He explained that he believed he rode a luxurious car even when wearing a worn-out car. Nonetheless, now he does not have to employ the strategy as he is one of the richest athletes.
UFC CEO Dana White recently revealed they expect a September return for McGregor. However, McGregor had earlier revealed that he will come back in June against Michael Chandler. Moreover, he even expressed interest in headlining UFC 300.
Conor McGregor credits two gyms in Ireland for changing his life
Conor McGregor is the best example of a rags-to-riches story in combat sports. In many eyes, McGregor lived the ‘American Dream’ with the UFC. However, he could never have done it alone as he had the support of his family, coaches, and friends among other things.
In his recent interview with GQ Sports, McGregor credited two gyms in Ireland for changing his life. This is what he had to say about it.
My local gyms, Crumlin Boxing Club and SBG, Straight Blast Gym Ireland. Crumlin Boxing Club is obviously where I learned how to box, and Straight Blast Gym Ireland is where I learned mixed martial arts. Such important factors in the community.....It changes people's lives. It changed my life.Conor McGregor via GQ Sports
McGregor became the martial artist he is now under the tutelage of SBG head coach John Kavanagh. Kavanagh is the antithesis of McGregor in terms of character. Kavanagh plays second fiddle to McGregor’s brash and outspoken persona. Now, the SBG is home to many elite MMA fighters in Europe. Moreover, fighters outside of Europe train there, like the Brazilian UFC light heavyweight Johnny Walker.
