Although it’s been over two years and Conor McGregor has suffered a significant injury since his last UFC fight, that doesn’t imply that he hasn’t been training. Recently, McGregor shared on social media that he earned a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu from his coach, John Kavanagh of SBG Ireland, after dedicating two decades of hard work to it.
On Instagram, the fighter posted a picture and wrote in the caption, “Received my black belt tonight from my coach, friend, and mentor, @coach_kavanagh of @sbgireland! 20 years of hard work! Thank you John for everything over the years, and to all of my teammates throughout this incredible jiu-jitsu journey! Thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart!”
McGregor is known for his knockout abilities and has one of the most accurate left hands in the history of the promotion. However, the former double champion has been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for years and even has a submission win in his long MMA career.
Inside the octagon, Conor McGregor has taken on some tough BJJ specialists and wrestlers. One of the most memorable fights that put McGregor’s ground game to the test was his 2019 fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov. As expected, after McGregor’s black belt news, there were fans who started the comparisons.

In the 2019 fight, despite Conor McGregor’s BJJ background, he failed to defend against Khabib Nurmagomedov on the ground. The Dagestani made it look easy but that might not be the best example to assess his BJJ ability, as Nurmagomedov was just the best in the world at that time.
Fans have mixed reactions to McGregor’s latest achievement and mentioned that getting a black belt is not an easy task at all. However, many made fun of McGregor for not using his BJJ in his MMA fights but still holding such respect.
Fans made comments about Nurmagomedov destroying McGregor’s BJJ and dominating himself inside the octagon. A few users also revealed that, given his past records, McGregor shouldn’t have that black belt.
